Gemmological and Mineralogical Characteristic of “Meihua Jade” from Funiu Mountain, Henan Province

  • A kind of greyish-green to greyish-black "Meihua jade" has been newly found in Funiu Mountain, Henan Province and it is called "Meihua jade" according to the surface pattern like plum blossom. In this paper, the gemmological and mineralogical characteristics of "Meihua jade" samples were tested by using the conventional gemmological methods, polarizing microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electron probe analysis and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the "Meihua jade" from Funiu Mountain has loose structure, waxy luster to weak vitreous luster. The internal voids with different minerals called amygdule. The relative density of precious stone is 2.84. The "Meihua jade" from Funiu Mountain has amygdaloidal structure, and there are albite, K-feldspar and actinolite in the matrix being hyalopilitic texture. Meanwhile, the tests of polarizing microscope and EPMA showed that the phenocryst consists of albite with polysynthetic twin and K-feldspar with simple twin. Most importantly, the mineral association of amygdule is complicated with feldspar, quartz, epidote, chlorite, calcite, and detritus.
