Abstract: The Raman spectra of various Tahitian black pearls have been tested, from which two kinds of substance are found, one is aragonite, the other is a kind of black pigment Even though the exact chemical compositions of the black pigment are not known, the spectra can be applied to the identification of pearls from Pinctada magaritifera.
