Abstract
A new kind of jade named "zebra stone" appeared in Donghai gem market of Jiangsu Province. The jade is dark green with white stripe and silky luster. The components of this new jade material are researched by using polarizing microscope,X-ray powder diffraction spectrometer(XRD),infrared spectrometer(FTIR),laser Raman spectroscopy(LRS),laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS).The results show that this "zebra stone" actually is a serpentine aggregation. The main mineral components of the green part in "zebra stone" is lizardite with a small amount of chlorite. And the main mineral components of the white part is chrysotile with a small amount of chlorite. The mineral components of the black inclusion is magnetite. The difference between "zebra stone" and ordinary serpentine is that there are directed fibrous chrysotile stripes and the parallel fabrious structure of chrysotile resulting the white stripes with silky luster in "zebra stone".But there are no differences in their refractive index, relative density and fluorescence characteristics.
