Abstract
The cathodoluminescence and the spectra of the different kinds of jadeite jade are studied by using BY-1 cathodoluminescence spectroscope. The results show that (1) the white jadeite jade has dark blue, light purple or greenish yellow cathodoluminescence and the spectrum peak is at 370 nm or 554 nm; (2) the light green-green jadeite jade shows the bright green-yellowish green cathodoluminescence, or purplish red when the green is darker, and the spectrum peak is at 554 nm and 760 nm; (3) the dark green jadeite jade usually shows the dark red cathodoluminescence and the peak is at 760 nm (dominant peak) and 693 nm (secondary peak); (4) the pinkish purple and purple jadeite jades show the bright purplish red-reddish purple cathodoluminescence and the peak is at 370 nm (dominant) and 680 nm (secondary) or 370 nm (secondary) and 680 nm (dominant), depending on the shade of purple; (5) the bluish purple jadeite jade shows the bluish purple cathodoluminescence and the peak is at 370 nm (secondary) and 508 nm (dominant). The gemmological significance and its mechanism of the cathodoluminescence of the various jadeite jades are analyzed primarilly in the paper.
