TESTING OF COPAL RESIN AND AMBER

  • The dis tinction between N ew Zealand K auri copal and amber was reviewed. T hen the gemmo-logical characteristics, inclusions and infrared spectra of the tested copal specimens were studied. The results show that copal can be distinguished from amber by testing with alcohol and infrared spectrum, but physical properties such as SG, RI and fluorescence as well as inclusions must be used carefully in identification.
