Application and Craft Characteristics of the "Xiao 6" Form in Filigree: A Case Study of Artifacts from the Ming and Qing Dynasties

The "Xiao 6" form is one of the most classic patterns in filigree craftsmanship. Its emergence and widespread adoption not only reflect the gradual refinement of filigree techniques but also mark a significant milestone in the maturation and systematization of filigree production methods. The consistent curling and high-precision soldering of "Xiao 6" form are its most representative technical features. This study employs literature research and image analysis to examine the specifications, decorative types, and implications of the "Xiao 6" form in Ming and Qing filigree artifacts, as well as its reflection of the development of the Ming dynasty handicraft industry. The findings indicate that the three-dimensional "Xiao 6" form exhibits both a two-dimensional planar character in its fabrication process and a three-dimensional structure composed of multiple folded facets. The large-scale use of the "Xiao 6" form further reveals a shift toward streamlined workflow and modular production in Ming Dynasty craftsmanship.
