Difference and Connection of Gem and Jewelry Appraisal Between China and America

It has already been 20 years since 1999 when jewelry appraisal industry was established in China. Meantime, various achievements have been accomplished in making regulations of jewelry appraisal, training of jewelry appraisers and gaining appraisal experiences. However, from the overall view, the Chinese jewelry appraisal industry has been in the exploring and developing stage. For developing and enhancing the Chinese jewelry appraisal industry, this paper, using the literature survey method, concept analysis method and comparative analysis, summarized the history of the development of American and Chinese jewelry appraisal industry.Three main aspects were compared and analyzed as follows: (1)The characteristics and differences of American and Chinese jewelry appraisal industry; (2) The differences between Chinese jewelry appraiser (Public Valuer of Gem, PVG) and American jewelry appraiser (AM, ASA and MGA). (3) The differences between Chinese jewelry appraisal standards or laws and American jewelry appraisal standards (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, USPAP). In conclusion, Chinese jewelry appraisal has high common content with American jewelry appraisal, however, there are also some differences in specific details. Standards of both country have advantages and disadvantages, and it is worthy to refer other country's standards. The article states that the jewelry appraisal industry in China is going to rise with the development of China's economy and the expanding of Chinese jewelry industry, clarifies that Chinese jewelry appraisal is one of the most important parts of the international jewelry industry, advocates that Chinese professional jewelry appraisers should actively participate in international cooperation and exchange, and make China'own contribution to the world.
