Abstract:
Based on the experimental studies on characteristics of the bleached,alkali-acid corroded,wax and macromolecule polymer-filled jadeite jade,the infrared absorption spectra of wax and macromolecule polymer-filled jadeite jade are studied by using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The results indicate that the relative absorptance(Ra) of the infrared absorption band and half apex-breadth area(Sa) are closely associated with the absorption of CH2 and CH3 in wax and macromolecule polymer,and usually can give enough evidence for scale determination of enhancement or treatment of jadeite jade,namely:1/4<Ra≤2/4,Sa≤15(dispensing with label) and 2/4<Ra≤3/4,15<Sa≤30(enhancement) and 3/4<Ra≤4/4,30<Sa(treatment). The essence and attribute of the bleached waxed jadeite jade and alkali-acid corroded filled jadeite jade are analyzed primarily in the paper.
Abstract:
The FTIR spectra of aragonites from different origins, which include aragonites from nacreous layers of pearls and bivalve shells, coral skeletons and natural inorganic aragonites, are measured and comparatively analyzed. The results show that the ν2 vibrational frequency of aragonites from nacreous layer has the mean value of 863.6 cm(-1 )which is about 7.9 cm-1and 9.1 cm-1, higher than that of aragonite from coral skeleton and natural inorganic aragonite respectively. The unusual characteristics of ν2 vibrational frequency of aragonites from nacreous layer is probably resulted from the low crystallinity, crystal lattice distortion and nanometer size of aragonites.
Abstract:
The XRD analysis shows the "water line" in Qinghai nephrite jade is mainly composed of tremolite. The tremolite fibers in the "water line" part is thinner and longer (several mm) than that of tremolites in the nephrite part, and they parallel to each other. The tremolite fibers in the "water line" is in abrupt contact with the nephrite part. The arrange direction of the fibers is upright to the extend direction of the "water line". The "water line" is formed by filling of ore fluid along cracks in nephrite jade. And the "water line" can not be regarded as the identification characteristic of its origin.
Abstract:
Surface microtopography,representation and tracing of nacreous layers of Pteria penguin and blister pearl from Sanya, Hainan Province, are studied by using interference microscopeand environmental scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. The research indicates that the microscale spiral (vortex) growth dislocation is another important growth mechanism of Pteria penguin and blister pearl from Sanya, Hainan Province. It indicates that the microscale spiral (vortex) growth dislocation is related to the ecosystem dynamics from South China Sea. The research present situation and advancement of growth structure of nacreous layer are discussed.
Abstract:
The thermal features of nacre aragonite from bivalve shells of Pinctada martensii are analyzed by using differential scanning calorimetry. It is observed that the thermal transformation of nacre aragonite to calcite is exothermal at about 445℃, whereas the transformation of synthetic aragonite is endothermal at about 498℃. The unusual exothermal transformation of nacre aragonite to calcite is perhaps resulted from the stored excess enthalpy in nanometer-size aragonite of nacre.
Abstract:
Luster is one of the most important appraising standards of pearl. The surface structures of the pink freshwater pearls from Jiangsu-Zhejiang region and the white seawater pearls from Guangdong Province are studied by using polarizing microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The relationship between the luster and the surface structure of pearl are discussed.

The Tibetan jewelry is always magic to us. Different from the modern jewelry, it is not only ornament, but also Buddhist object. This article inquires into the influence of the Tibetan Buddhism on Tibetan jewelry from the different aspects including material, variety, shape and decorative pattern, and indicates that the Tibetan Buddhism is the unique spirit contained in the Tibetan jewelry.

Double happiness is a propitious pattern with Chinese traditional cultural feature. It represents happiness and propitiousness. The Olympic village of Beijing Olympic games in 2008 will be designed in the layout of "double happiness". Accordingly, the "double happiness" can be associated with the Olympic jewelry design. Beginning with the culture of "happiness" and "double happiness", the historical and cultural connotation of "double happiness"and its aesthetics are discussed. Eventually, the conception of Olympic wedding jewelry design is conceived from the application of the "double happiness" in ancient and modern jewelry.

The ancient Egyptian culture enjoys a long history and its jewelry is a classical miniature of the ancient Egyptian culture and art to some extent. On the basis of a summary of the main kinds, the special use and the materials of the ancient Egyptian jewelry, the culture origination of the ancient Egyptian jewelry and its art value are analyzed.
