Study of Application of Titanium on Surface of Decorative Jewelry

  • Titanium is a new type of materials used in the decoration painting field, and research of its application in jewelry design is rare. The surface treatments of titanium decorative paintings are divided into three kinds, namely the atmosphere heating oxidation, chemical oxidation and anodic oxidation method. There is a titanium oxide film of microns or even tens of microns thick on titanium surface.Under the condition of this thin film, light reflecting from the upper side of the film and penetrating through surface of titanium respectively meet and interfere, which make the surface colour of titanium very beautiful. With the purpose of applying titanium to surface decoration, this research uses oxidation, mechanical treatment and chemical etching method based on oxidation to analyze jewelry decoration effects. The oxidation method is to oxidize the surface of titanium repeatedly, which changes the thickness of the oxide layer to present diverse colour effects.Mechanical treatment is generated by applying external force to the metal surface, using manual or power tools to forge, shock, grind or cut before oxidizing the surface to generate the decorative effects.Decorative painting process through chemical etching of titanium mainly refers to applying etching liquid of a certain proportion to the oxide surface, which achieves a unique decorative effect.Technology of titanium decorative painting productions applied to the surface of titanium jewelry through methods of oxidation, mechanical treatment and chemical etching is used to get the design and surface decoration effects of metal jewelry.Comparing the three methods, oxidation is simple and rapid and the transition is natural. The disadvantage is that the contrast effect is weak and the scope of oxidization area is hard to control.Mechanical method has advantages of presenting strong industrial manufacturing feelings, while its disadvantage is that it is difficult to produce and costs much material. The advantage of chemical etching method lies in that it is subtle and clear and makes a strong effect. The second oxidation process is more conducive for colour control, and anti-corrosion wax and antiseptic paper can realize transmission among various styles, contrast of colours, textures and thickness. The drawback is that material used is pollutive. It is obvious that the chemical etching method is subtler, clearer and can produce texture, contrast of colour and thickness.Meanwhile the operation is simple and the process is relatively fast. The result shows that based on the mechanical method, the decorative effect on the surface of titanium jewelry can be achieved through methods of chemical etching and simple oxidation jointly.
