Analysis of Domestic Research Hotspots and Trends of Gemstone Discipline in China:Knowledge Mapping Analysis Based on the Data Cited from Journal of Gems & Gemmology

  • A knowledge mapping analysis was applied to 1 362 papers published in the Journal of Gems & Gemmology from 1999 to 2019 by adoption of sofewares such as Excel and Citespace via statistical methods. The cluster research results draw the domestic gemmology research knowledge map from the aspects of spatial and temporal distribution, keyword clustering and hotspots highlighting. The research indicates that the domestic gemmology research hotspots and research trends are as follows: (1) Gemmology discipline is a "flexible discipline" which is easy to cross and integrate with other disciplines. However, the current domestic gemmological research interests are diverse and not concentrate; (2) the cooperation between domestic gem research institutions is loose; (3) researchers' continuous motivation focus on the research subject is insufficient; (4) the hotspots of domestic gemmology research papers are still focused on the traditional research directions related to geology while the newly developed discipline direction is insufficient in theory support and lacks of systematic and in-depth research. This paper discusses the development and evolution of gemstone discipline, aiming to provide data reference for its development under the background of double first-class construction in colleges and universities and industry development.
