Abstract: A number of rubies from Ailao Mountain,Yunnan Province,are collected and 30 representative samples with the developed crystal form are picked out.The surface microtopography of the ruby crystal is studied by using the reflected differential interference microscope and environmental scanning electron microscope.The results show that the triangular growth steps on the base of the ruby are developed.Hexagonal and wave-like layered growth traces on the surface of the triangular growth steps are the important evidences of the layered growth of the ruby.The developed triangular etch pits on the base can provide the important provenance information.
