Abstract:
A kind of lead glass-filled ruby samples on the market nowadays are studied by using the gemmological microscope, electron microprobe with backscattered electron imaging technology,as well as the composition, morphology, distribution characteristics of the solid inclusions and the lead glass-fillings are analysed. The ruby rough samples are dark red to light red, transparent to translucent, most of which are hexagonal column and barrel or drum shapes are rare or no.The results show that the ruby samples have been obviously modified by the lead glass-filling and heat treatment, but the treatment temperature is lower and the mineral inclusions have no hot-melt phenomenon. The mineral inclusions mainly include rutile, zircon, apatite, biotite, spinel and so on.The rutile inclusions have protogenetic and syngenetic stages. The protogenetic rutile inclusions are of fragmentation. The syngenetic rutile inclusions are mainly short column, and some are long column. At last, the cause of the inclusions and locality in ruby samples are also discussed.
