Abstract:
Recently, the filled semi-precious stone samples such as aquamarine and tourmaline appeared on the jewelry markets are studied, and the gemmological characteristics of their fillings are tested by using the gemmological microscope and infrared spectrum testing technology. The results show that the gemmological characteristics such as the blue flash effect, the residual flat gas bubbles, the flow structures and the slag-like fillings are helpful to identify the filled aquamarine and tourmaline samples. The infrared absorption spectra at 2 962,2 931,2 879 cm
-1 caused by the antisymmetric and symmetrical stretching vibration of the saturated hydrocarbons υ(-CH
3-)and(-CH
2-) and at 3 046 cm
-1 caused by the stret-ching vibration of the aromatic nucleus υ(C-H) could be used to identify the filled aquamarine. The infrared absorption spectra at 2 962,2 927,2 865 cm
-1caused by the stretching vibration of the saturated hydrocarbons υ(-CH
3-) and υ(-CH
2-) are accessary to identify the filled tourmaline. It is suggested that the fillings of different filled semi-precious stones could be different by their colour, shape, relatively viscous state and flow features.
